“January” is a mesmerizing winter work by Grant Wood, completed in 1940. This oil painting plunges us into the freezing and silent cold of the Midwest. The landscape is dominated by large shocks of dried corn, erected like primitive tents or mysterious hooded figures. They bow under the weight of a thick layer of immaculate snow, whose snowdrifts with smooth and cottony curves sculpt the field. In the foreground, a trail of small animal tracks, probably a rabbit, winds through the powder, bringing a delicate touch of life to this frozen setting. The heavy and dark sky, of a deep bluish gray, contrasts with the brilliant whiteness of the snow, reinforcing the atmosphere of isolation and absolute calm.
