This still life is a virtuoso study of light on monochrome objects. A jar, a bottle, and a glass are depicted in shades of gray, black, and white. The composition is a complex fragmentation of forms, where the objects seem to blend into one another. The light, coming from the right, creates strong diagonal shadows that energize the scene. It is a work of great intellectual rigor, which pushes analytical cubism to its peak. Gris does not seek to represent the objects, but the very idea of these objects, their geometric essence, and their relationship with light.
