Last Supper of Popeye after Leonardo da Vinci

A museum reproduction transposing a religious fresco into a joyful maritime chaos

This vast horizontal composition reinterprets one of the most famous religious frescoes of the Italian Renaissance by transposing it into the maritime and hectic world of a classic American cartoon. The artist offers a rich parody of Leonardo da Vinci’s famous mural. Titled “Last Supper of Popeye (after Da Vinci)”, this oil painting replaces the sacred figures with the exuberant crew of the famous spinach-eating sailor, transforming theological solemnity into a joyful chaos typical of old cartoons of the nineteen thirties.

The humor and anachronisms of this reinterpretation lie in the substitution of the figure of Christ with Popeye, sitting proudly in the center of the table with a can of spinach. The twelve original apostles are replaced by his faithful companions and rivals, including Swee’Pea in his high chair, Olive Oyl on his right, and the imposing Bluto. Instead of bread and wine, the table is littered with spinach cans, hamburgers piled up for Wimpy, and fish bones. Under the banquet table, huge pink octopus tentacles appear in an unusual way, while ship portholes replace classical windows.

The painter demonstrates exceptional mastery in the work of wood, shadows, and linear perspective characteristic of Da Vinci’s original work. The oil rendering of the textures of the tablecloth, the wooden walls, and the caricatured expressions of the characters shows craftsmanship of great precision, perfectly marrying classical rigor and retro animation.
