Entitled “Lady writing a letter with her maid”, this exceptional creation painted by Jan Vermeer depicts a high-society lady writing a letter under the watchful eye of her maid. In the right foreground, the mistress of the house wearing a white bonnet leans over a table covered with a rich red Oriental rug to write with a quill. Behind her stands a maid with crossed arms, dressed in a dark bodice and brown apron, looking toward the large stained-glass window on the left. Bright morning light passes through sheer curtains, illuminating the plaster wall holding an imposing black-framed religious painting. The floor is paved with a black and white checkerboard marble tile pattern. In the lower right corner rests a wooden chair studded with nails.
