This view of Cadaqués is an excellent example of Derain’s brief but intense Cubist period. The Spanish village is broken down into geometric forms, the houses becoming cubes and prisms. The palette is deliberately reduced to neutral tones of ocher, gray, and beige, in order to focus on the analysis of structure and volumes. It is an intellectual approach to the landscape, influenced by Cézanne and the research then being conducted by Picasso and Braque.
