This view of London Bridge (probably Waterloo Bridge) is another facet of Derain’s London stay. The treatment of the water, with its dabs of green and yellow, is reminiscent of Monet, but the simplification of forms and the boldness of the colors (the pink sky, the blue shadows) are typical of Fauvism. Here, Derain synthesizes the Impressionist heritage and his own quest for expressive color.
