“Lovers in the Countryside”, also known by the evocative name of “The Happy Lovers”, is a deeply personal and romantic work by Gustave Courbet. The painting focuses in a very tight shot on the faces of two young lovers tenderly embraced. The man, who features the recognizable traits of Courbet himself with his dark beard and abundant hair, embraces the woman whose head rests against his cheek. Their eyes are half-closed, expressing infinite sweetness, shared intimacy, and serene happiness. The warm light, coming from the left, illuminates their profiles and sculpts the volumes with great delicacy, while leaving the rest of the painting in an enveloping darkness. The landscape background is barely sketched, the painter preferring to focus all emotion on the silent union and spiritual fusion of the two lovers in the heart of nature.
