Markos Botsaris* by Jean-Léon Gérôme

This pictorial work is fully part of the Orientalism movement, a highly appreciated academic artistic trend of the nineteenth century. The surrounding walls are covered with blue and white tiles with complex geometric patterns. On the right, a traditional hookah is placed directly on the dirt floor next to a traditional rug. A rifle hangs from the wall in the background.

The painter’s exceptional technique is revealed in the meticulous rendering of materials such as fur and velvet. His mastery of oil painting confers a striking realism to the costume and the glazed tiles. This dramatic chiaroscuro delicately highlights the melancholy and solitude of the scene.
