Ooh What a Line by Gil Elvgren

This hand painted oil on canvas sublimates the candor of this charming conversation

In the sparkling world of post-war popular art, female representations of the pin-up embodied an ideal of optimism and domestic charm. It is within this creative dynamic that the American virtuoso Gil Elvgren imagined the splendid composition entitled “Ooh What a Line”. This work features a female figure full of energy and candor facing an unexpected situation of daily life. The image reflects the joyful aesthetic of an era fond of fresh and self-deprecating sketches.

Seated in profile on a high white kitchen stool, a young blonde woman wide-opens her eyes in surprise, her mouth open in a funny red accent. She holds a black telephone receiver against her ear while placing her left hand flat on the light wood wall unit from which hangs a large red directory. Her outfit consists of a bright blue dress enhanced by a white apron embroidered in red and tied with a wide scarlet ribbon at the waist. A small black bow crowns her curly hair. The movement of her bent leg reveals sheer black stockings held by dark garters, ending in elegant blue strap shoes. The solid, warm yellow background perfectly isolates the protagonist under a flattering light.

This creation demonstrates all the artist’s dexterity in the striking rendering of facial expressions and the brilliance of his color palette. The contrast of materials, between the polished wood of the device and the fluid satin of the dress, reveals an exceptional painting technique. It is a striking example of his ability to sublimate the simplest daily scenes.
