Two nymphs with milky skin lie entirely nude by a stream of dark, living water. One of them, represented from behind, leans on a tilted golden urn from which a thin stream of water flows. On the left, a horned satyr crowned with ivy intrudes through the dense reeds to observe them greedily. The facing nymph, surprised, casts a worried and fascinated look at the wild face of the forest god. In the upper shadows, two small winged cupids fly off, one of them brandishing a burning torch. The moonlight strikes the generous curves of the female bodies in a spectacular way, standing out against the darkness of the surrounding forest.

François Boucher demonstrates incredible technical virtuosity in the dramatic treatment of chiaroscuro. His ability to render the anatomy of the nymphs, the movement of the reeds, and the reflections of the water bears witness to exceptional expertise. This canvas shows his perfect mastery of oil painting to create realistic sensual tension.
