Phryne before the Areopagus* by Jean-Léon Gérôme

This theatrical work is fully part of the Neo-Grec and classical movement, a French academic style highly popular in the nineteenth century. The famous painter Gérôme Jean-Léon staging here a famous episode of antiquity with exceptional dramatic power. The composition entitled “Phryne before the Areopagus” illustrates the trial of the Greek courtesan before her judges impressed by her pure beauty. This masterly creation testifies to the artist’s deep interest in historical narratives and detailed archaeological reconstructions.

In the center of the huge stone courtroom, a young, completely naked woman hides her face with her arms in a gesture of modesty. To her left, a lawyer wearing a blue toga lifts the blue veil of the courtesan to reveal her divine beauty to the judges. The latter, seated on semi-circular benches in the background, wear long red robes and display expressions of surprise and fascination. On the right, a small golden statue of Athena is placed on a white marble altar decorated with garlands. The bright light vertically illuminates the white body of the young woman, strongly contrasting with the darkness of the Greek temple and the red clothes of the magistrates.

The artist’s technical virtuosity bursts in the striking contrast between Phryne’s diaphanous skin and the colorful draperies of the togas. His absolute mastery of oil paint restores the solemnity of ancient architecture and the realism of the characters’ expressions. This masterpiece confirms the painter’s legendary expertise.
