Phryne before the Areopagus* by Jean-Léon Gérôme

A theatrical hand painted picture immortalizing the dramatic revelation of a divine beauty

This spectacular work is part of the Neo-Grec movement, a refined French academic trend of the nineteenth century of which the artist is a leader. The talented painter Gérôme Jean-Léon is inspired here by the history of ancient Greece to stage a famous and dramatic trial. The composition entitled “Phryne before the Areopagus” illustrates the moment of amazement when the defender reveals his client’s nudity before the assembled judges. This narrative creation testifies to a deep taste for classical archaeology and dramatic theatricality.

At the center of the composition, a young, completely naked woman stands on a pedestal, hiding her face in modesty with her arm. To her left, a lawyer dressed in a draped blue toga swiftly removes the large light blue veil that covered her. Before them, on a stone altar, rests a small golden statue next to a gilded bronze censer. In the background, about fifty magistrates dressed in sumptuous scarlet cloaks are seated in a semicircle on stone benches, expressing various reactions of surprise and fascination. The light coming from above intensely illuminates the woman’s body, highlighting her marble-like whiteness against the dark background of the courtroom.

The virtuosity of the artist is expressed in the sculptural treatment of the female body and the silky rendering of the red draperies. His extraordinary mastery of the oil technique gives this historical scene a striking chromatic depth. This masterpiece of great precision testifies to his immense academic expertise.
