Poem by Kanke by Katsushika Hokusai

A hand-painted picture ideal for wall decoration with this remarkable print illustrating

This remarkable print beautifully illustrates the sense of detail in traditional Japanese art during the Edo period. Within the composition entitled “Poem by Kanke”, the ukiyo-e master Hokusai Katsushika stages a formal imperial procession stationary near a secret shrine. The creation is part of a poetic series celebrating the nobility of ancient customs and the harmony of seasons through a visual narrative of great spiritual delicacy.

A large ceremonial carriage richly decorated with a curved red roof and floral motifs occupies the left side of the image, supported by huge dark spoked wheels. In the right foreground, a robust ox with a brown coat lies peacefully on the beige ground, covered with a blue cloth blanket adorned with vibrant peonies. Around the animal, several servants and dignitaries dressed in blue kimonos with geometric patterns are busy, some prostrating with devotion while others hold vertical poles. In the clear sky, small red maple leaves swirl gracefully, bringing an autumnal note to the scene. The orderly linear composition emphasizes the solemnity of this ritual.

The craftsman’s talent shines through in the extraordinary fineness of the engraved lines and the vividness of the chromatic palette. His mastery of woodblock printing allows him to juxtapose complex textile details with striking decorative realism. This meticulous execution bears witness to an exceptional expertise.
