In this sumptuous “Portrait of a woman”, Franz von Stuck captures the enigmatic beauty of his model with remarkable grace. The female figure, shown in a three-quarter view, looks away to the right, offering a profile of great elegance. Her dark, wavy hair, held back in a loose chignon, frames a face with regular features and porcelain skin. She is dressed in a loose, pleated dress in burgundy and plum tones, the texture of which subtly catches the light. Unlike his often dark canvases, von Stuck chooses here a bright and airy background: a blue sky dotted with fluffy white clouds and a distant horizon evoking a rural landscape. This work testifies to the artist’s ability to combine the classical rigor of portraiture with the poetry of a symbolist composition.
