Prayer in the house of an Arnaut Chief* by Jean-Léon Gérôme

This captivating work is fully part of the Orientalism movement, a major French artistic trend of the nineteenth century. The famous painter Gérôme Jean-Léon illustrates through this scene of collective devotion his interest in the rituals and customs of the peoples of the Ottoman Empire. The composition entitled “Prayer in the house of an Arnaut Chief” shows a group of soldiers and believers gathered in an interior to perform a solemn spiritual ceremony. This creation testifies to a remarkable ethnographic rigor and a sincere respect for local traditions.

In a large, simple room with light-colored walls, nine men dressed in adorned traditional costumes are lined up side by side on large, colorful carpets. These characters wear white turbans or red caps, vests embroidered with gold thread, pleated white skirts, or long woolen robes. Several of them have their hands raised or joined in a sign of contemplative prayer, their eyes turned toward the right side of the room. On the floor, in front of the carpets, several pairs of shoes and slippers are carefully aligned along the edge of the wooden floor. The soft light enters through a side opening on the right, gently illuminating the concentrated faces and casting light shadows on the back wall.
