Princezna Hyacinta by Alfons Mucha

Prague’s theater and live performance inspire the master Alphonse Mucha to create one of his most beautiful Art Nouveau advertising designs. This famous theatrical poster carries the masterly title “Princezna Hyacinta” and integrates stylized lettering at the top of the image to announce the dramatic performance. The artist deploys all his inventiveness to sublimate the play’s heroine by transforming her into a mysterious fairytale creature.

A young blonde woman with a melancholy and determined blue gaze is depicted sitting on a large green and purple velvet armchair. She pensively rests her chin on her right index finger, while her left hand supports a large circular silver motif evoking a flower of frost or crystal. She is dressed in a sumptuous fluid white gown adorned with a wide golden band with Byzantine geometric patterns at the bottom of her skirt. Her head is crowned with a tiara of metallic stars and bright red flowers placed on her curly hair. Behind her head unfolds a night blue background dotted with golden stars and framed by a decorative arch in complex grey tones.

The technical virtuosity of the artist is fully expressed in the millimetric precision of the circular crystal pattern and the sumptuousness of the Byzantine jewelry. Mucha excels at rendering the contrasting textures of heavy velvet, light fabric and metallic reflections. This work remains an undisputed masterpiece of theatrical poster art.
