Public prayer in the Mosque of Amr Cairo by Jean-Léon Gérôme

This masterly and spiritual work illustrates one of the most famous themes of the French academic Orientalism movement. The rigorous perspective of the colonnades guides the eye towards the mystical depth of the prayer temple.

The painter’s absolute mastery of perspective is manifested in this grandiose and perfectly balanced composition. His refined oil technique makes it possible to immortalize the subtle play of light filtering through the arches. This architectural realism gives an exceptional documentary authenticity to this sacred scene.
