Reception of Le Grand Condé by Louis XIV at Versailles by Jean-Léon Gérôme

A theatrical master copy restoring the majestic glory of a historic royal submission

This major historical work belongs to the French academic movement of the nineteenth century. The famous painter Gérôme Jean-Léon revives with splendor the spirit of the court of Versailles to celebrate a glorious moment of royalty. The painting entitled “Reception of Le Grand Condé by Louis XIV at Versailles” depicts a prestigious submission in a grandiose setting. This theatrical composition shows the artist’s remarkable taste for rigorous and highly accurate historical reconstructions.

At the heart of a sumptuous marble palace, a crowd of aristocratic courtiers is gathered in the upper galleries. On the landing of an immense monumental staircase, the king of France, dressed in light silk, welcomes a prince of royal blood. The latter, in a sparkling red coat, bows respectfully as he descends the stairs scattered with laurel branches. Numerous guards in glittering armor and holding halberds frame the scene. A profusion of colorful flags and banners, captured from the enemy, majestically adorns the banisters of the staircase. Natural light brightly illuminates the expressive faces of the nobles and the sumptuousness of the period costumes.

The extreme meticulousness brought to the architectural details and the costumes reveals an extraordinary artisanal expertise. The artist’s oil on canvas technique makes it possible to render the brilliance of the polished marble and the delicacy of the fabrics. This absolute masterpiece demonstrates the exceptional realism of the painter.
