Housed at the Musée d’Orsay, this painting is one of Degas’s most famous ballet scenes. The work is done in grisaille, a technique using shades of gray, which gives it the appearance of an old photograph or drawing. Numerous dancers are on stage, some rehearsing, others resting. The light coming from the wings on the left creates silhouettes and strong contrasts. The high-angle viewpoint and off-center composition are typical of Degas, who sought to capture a realistic and un-idealized vision of ballet.
