River and Rocks by Gustave Courbet

This landscape painting illustrates the Realist movement’s deep commitment to the faithful representation of the natural sites of Franche-Comté. This view of a wild and deep gorge, bathed in a mysterious atmosphere, is presented under the title “River and Rocks”. Thanks to this monumental work, Gustave Courbet celebrates the wild and timeless strength of his native region, far from any idealization of classical landscape tradition.

In the foreground, a very calm and dark body of water perfectly reflects the green hues of the surrounding vegetation and the steep rocky walls. High cliffs of grayish and white limestone rise vertically on both sides, framing the landscape and ascending toward a thin patch of blue sky dotted with light clouds. A dense forest of green fir and deciduous trees covers the summits and clings tenaciously to the smallest crevices of the stone. The warm sunlight gently illuminates the treetops and the left cliffs, leaving the bottom of the gorge in cool shadow. The vertical composition emphasizes grandeur.

The artist’s technique is fully expressed in the work of rocky textures achieved with wide brushes and palette knives. The thickness of the paint material recreates the roughness of the stone and the density of the forest foliage. This masterpiece of oil painting demonstrates an exceptionally outstanding sense of realism.
