Saint Andrew and Saint Francis by El Greco

This sacred composition of great nobility brings together two founding pillars of the Christian Church under the inimitable stylistic prism of El Greco. Conceived to illustrate the doctrinal dialogue and complementarity of the apostles, the canvas is presented under the title of “Saint Andrew and Saint Francis”. The work expresses the strength of faith through an intense visual confrontation between two major spiritual personalities of the New Testament.

On the left, Saint Peter stands, his bearded face turned towards his companion, dressed in a blue tunic and a large golden yellow cloak with changing reflections. With his right hand, he makes an explanatory gesture, while discreetly holding the keys to the heavenly kingdom. On the right, Saint Paul, draped in a brown or ochre cloak, places his right hand on his chest in a burst of deep conviction. Between them, they jointly support a large cross made of raw wood that vertically crosses the space of the composition. The elongated silhouettes stand out against a background of gray and bluish fleecy clouds, illuminated by an unreal clarity that sculpts the draperies.

The artist’s know-how bursts forth in the chromatic richness of the cloaks and the clever modulation of shadows that give relief to the expressions. His unique technique of oil painting confers a vibrant texture to the fabrics and a timeless dignity to this holy meeting.
