Saint Francis venerating the crucifix by El Greco

This masterpiece of great sobriety is part of the tradition of hagiographic representations intended for private oratory. Known under the name of “Saint Francis venerating the crucifix”, the painting perfectly illustrates the unique style of El Greco, marked by an acute sense of sacred theatricality. Through this kneeling figure, the artist offers a timeless reflection on the renunciation of worldly goods and the solitude of the hermit in direct communion with the Creator.

A bearded hermit appears fully kneeling in profile, oriented towards the right side of the frame, his arms crossed over his chest in a sign of contrition. He wears a heavy grey robe belted by a knotted cord that trails on the stony ground. In front of him, on a natural rock altar, rest a closed book with a gilded edge, a skull, and a tilted crucifix. A branch of green ivy climbs the dark rock wall above the saint, bringing a unique touch of vegetation. In the background, a narrow opening reveals a twilight sky dotted with slender white clouds, while a white note lies on the ground.
