Saint Mary Magdalene by El Greco

Her delicate hands with manicured nails are crossed on her lap in an attitude of serene submission. To her left, on a rocky ledge shaded by climbing ivy, are a glass perfume vase and a human skull. The setting combines dark rock with a background of tormented grey and white clouds.

The craftsmanship bursts forth in the transparent rendering of the fine gauze veil on the chest and the silky texture of the golden hair.
