Santa Maria Della Salute by Canaletto

This strikingly beautiful canvas is fully part of the eighteenth-century Venetian vedutismo movement. Under the name of “Santa Maria Della Salute”, the famous Italian painter Canaletto proposes a magnificent view of the entrance to the Grand Canal. The work captures the splendid encounter between baroque religious architecture and the river animation of the lagoon city, offering a composition of incomparable clarity.

On the right, the monumental dome of the Santa Maria della Salute church rises nobly above the shore, its sculpted structures bathed in a soft golden light. In the foreground, numerous dark gondolas and large ceremonial boats with colorful awnings glide on the turquoise waters of the canal. Boatmen work vigorously on their long wooden oars, creating light ripples on the surface of the water. On the opposite bank, elegant palaces line up in an impeccable perspective stretching toward Saint Mark’s Basin. A clear blue sky, dotted with fine white clouds, illuminates the entire scene with spring-like clarity.
