Seascape 2 by Édouard Manet

This spectacular seascape illustrates the constant fascination of avant-garde painters for coastal scenes and the wild force of natural elements. The great painter Édouard Manet reinvents here the traditional genre of maritime landscapes by breathing in a modern energy and an unprecedented freedom of execution. On the sandy shore in the foreground on the left, two silhouettes of sailors, one riding a dark horse, watch the scene. On the right, a black anchor is partially planted in the sand, visually anchoring the composition and contrasting with the fluid movement of the sea.

The artist deploys here a craftsmanship of great modernity through a broad and spontaneous handling of oil paint. The mastery of liquid textures and the rendering of the changing reflections of water demonstrate a unique sensitivity and a great aesthetic rigor.
