Shepherd in the Atlas Mountains (Wegener)

A souvenir of the couple’s travels in Morocco, this work depicts a young shepherd sitting in the desert. He wears a white tunic and an ocher vest, a turban on his head, and holds a stick. The landscape behind him is stylized: sand dunes, low vegetation, trees with tortured shapes, and a cubic white building (marabout or tomb) under a gradient blue sky. A black donkey crosses the background. The colors are warm and bright, dominated by ochres and sands, contrasting with the blue of the sky. The style mixes ethnographic realism and modern simplification.
