Solomons wall Jerusalem - The wailing wall* by Jean-Léon Gérôme

The talented painter Gérôme Jean-Léon captures here a moment of solemn devotion before one of the most sacred remains of religious history. The composition entitled “Solomons wall Jerusalem - The wailing wall” depicts the intimacy and fervor of individual prayers in an urban space filled with meditation. This remarkable painting testifies to the artist’s sensitivity towards the diversity of expressions of faith in the Holy Land.

Before the monumental wall made of giant stone blocks worn by time, several Jewish worshippers are gathered. On the left, a man dressed in a dark coat prays with his forehead pressed against the ancient stone. By his side, three men draped in white prayer shawls stand in a group, absorbed in their psalms. In the center, a bearded man wearing a long grey coat and a traditional fur hat is depicted from behind, observing the wall attentively. The paved floor of wide stone slabs is bathed in a golden light that illuminates the top of the wall.

The painter’s exceptional technique is manifested in the realistic rendering of the stones eroded by centuries and the drapery of the shawls. His perfect mastery of oil and of the raking light creates a striking contrast between the shadow of the alley and the brilliance of the wall. This masterpiece expresses a great poetic serenity.
