Spring in the Country (Wood)

“Spring in the Country” (1941) is a joyful hymn to the fertility of the land and the cyclical renewal of nature. Grant Wood deploys his idyllic and harmonious vision of the American Midwest here. In the foreground, a woman in a white dress and a young boy in overalls plant seedlings in the dark, rich soil, working with geometric precision along a stretched string. To their left, a large tree in full bloom bursts with luminous white. In the background, Wood’s characteristic rolling landscape stretches as far as the eye can see, with fields of intense green and horses pulling a plow.
