Still Life - Bread Basket and Red Wine by André Derain

As part of his research into space and matter, Derain André explores darker and more mysterious tones. This canvas painting, named “Still Life - Bread Basket and Red Wine”, bears witness to a transition toward clean geometric shapes that recall the influence of nascent Cubism. The artist orchestrates here a dialogue between simple household forms under a theatrical and hushed lighting.

At the center, a simply shaped glass bottle stands next to a dish containing circular organic elements. A stemmed glass half-filled with red wine is placed on the left of the tablecloth. A very dark blue-grey drapery falls in vertical folds in the left background, while a straw chair is visible in the very lower foreground.

The work demonstrates the painter’s remarkable technical mastery in the application of shades of blue and black. The shapes are outlined by dark contours that accentuate their volume and their presence in space. The way of capturing light on the glass and the tablecloth reveals an exceptional craftsmanship.
