Still Life - Fruits and Fan by André Derain

This mysterious still life bears witness to the artist’s interest in tenebrism and dark atmospheres inspired by the old masters of Spain and Italy. In a very dark, almost entirely black interior, a wooden table holds a few objects. A large, dark glass bottle, slender like a carafe, stands on the left of the composition. In the center, a white ceramic bowl contains two dark red fruits, resembling apples. Near the bowl, a pleated object evoking an open fan or a shell adds a complex texture to the foreground. A lonely stemmed glass, barely perceptible in the shadow, completes this silent scene. The light, extremely focused, seems to emanate from an invisible source on the left, brushing the outlines of the objects.

This creation highlights the artist’s remarkable mastery of oil painting, capable of bringing forms out of the nothingness of shadow. His treatment of the texture of glass and ceramic reveals great technical talent.
