Still Life with Guitar by Juan Gris

In this work of great chromatic sobriety, the artist explores the limits of abstraction through the recurring theme of the guitar. With this graphic creation entitled “Still Life with Guitar”, the avant-garde painter Juan Gris simplifies the structure of the instrument into overlapping dark planes. The artist favors an almost geometric formal rigor, far from any realistic figurative desire. This approach illustrates the artist’s transition towards a radical stylization, characteristic of his research into refined cubism.

The vertical cubist composition is organized around dark geometric planes, mixing intense black, Payne’s grey, and deep brown. In the center, one can easily guess the fragmented silhouette of a guitar, materialized by a solid black disc representing the soundhole and suggested musical strings. Two triangular shapes of a bright terracotta orange bring a dynamic color note to the heart of the dark canvas. The lower part presents an inclined brown wooden plane dotted with small, regular golden dots. The background is plunged into deep darkness, structured by sinuous lines and various shaded areas. The low, mysterious light seems to emanate directly from the central grey shapes.

The exceptional craftsmanship of Gris is revealed in the subtle play of matte textures and contrasts of values. His oil technique makes it possible to obtain shades of black of remarkable depth without overloading the canvas. This silent masterpiece bears witness to his absolute mastery of geometrized pictorial space.
