Still Life with Sheet (Léger)

“Still Life with Sheet” is a work from Fernand Léger’s Purist period. The composition is a rigorous balance between organic and geometric forms. A large white leaf, rendered with shadows to give it sculptural volume, vertically dominates the canvas. It contrasts with a dark background, divided between deep reddish-brown and black. To the left, a yellow frame contains a colorful decorative pattern. To the right, a stem bears small yellow leaves. Léger creates a monumental still life, where each element is treated as a type-object in a perfectly ordered space.
