The Arts: Painting* by Alfons Mucha

The revival of graphic arts during the Belle Époque owes enormously to the innovative compositions of the poster artist Alphonse Mucha. This splendid variant in square format integrates with great narrative elegance the title “The Arts: Painting” to sublimate a highly allegorical female figure. Through this bold cropping, the artist intensifies the impact of his subject by concentrating the gaze on the expressive face and colorful harmony of his print.

In the center of this square composition stands out the bust of a young woman with long wavy red hair falling in voluptuous curls. Crowned with red poppy flowers and stylized stems, she keeps her eyes lowered in a pensive and collected attitude. She is dressed in coral-colored drapery attached to her shoulders by thin golden goldsmith chains. With her right hand, she presents a small delicate red flower in the foreground. The background is formed by a large disc decorated with peacock ocelli patterns, while the upper corners of the image are richly decorated with garlands of red poppies.

Mucha’s technical mastery shines in the rendering of contrasts between the incandescent hair and the tones of the coral dress. His dark, firm outline gives perfect readability to feminine and plant shapes. This work illustrates how well the artist knows how to combine painting with advertising graphics.
