The Ascent to Calvary by Eugène Delacroix

A theatrical oil painting expressing the tumult and fervor of this tragedy

This religious scene of an incredible dramatic intensity is painted by Eugène Delacroix within the flamboyant framework of romanticism with the work entitled “The Ascent to Calvary”. The painter appropriates this traditional theme of holy history to turn it into a true human and spiritual tragedy. Through the physical expressiveness of the characters and the dynamism of the staging, this work expresses the pain, the tumult, and the mystical fervor characteristic of the romantic vision of sacred art.

In the center of the composition, Christ crowned with thorns collapses under the weight of the heavy dark wooden cross. He is surrounded by a disorganized crowd of Roman soldiers in metallic armor and executioners with tense gestures. On the right, the Virgin Mary, enveloped in an ample drapery of deep blue, collapses on her knees, supported by other weeping figures in a gesture of absolute distress. Prancing horses appear on the sides, accentuating the confusion of the procession. The background is dominated by a rocky hill standing out under a stormy sky swept by heavy dark clouds, illuminated by a pale light that cruelly strikes the victim’s face.

The artist delivers here a masterpiece of plastic expressiveness thanks to a nervous and fiery pictorial touch. His masterly control of colorful contrasts and spiritual light underlines the distress of the Passion. He magnifies the drama with an incomparable sense of texture and movement.
