“The Beautiful Cyclists” was painted by Fernand Léger during his exile in New York. It is part of his series on cyclists and acrobats, celebrating the human body in motion and popular leisure. The composition shows a group of robust men and women, intertwined with their bicycles. Léger uses his post-war style: thick black outlines and flat areas of primary colors (red, blue, yellow) as well as green, which are applied independently of the lines. The bodies are monumental and the faces impassive, treated as sculptural forms in a dynamic space.
