The Bridge at Le Pecq by André Derain

Inspired by the bustle of great modern cities, the painter Derain André immortalizes an urban snapshot in his canvas entitled “The Bridge at Le Pecq”. This composition reflects the decisive influence of divisionist and fauve theories on the author’s vision, transforming a simple street into a space of chromatic tension. The turmoil of ordinary life becomes the pretext for a bold deconstruction of traditional forms through pure color.

On the right, a team of white and black horses pulls a heavy cart, framed by silhouettes of busy passersby. In the foreground, a large strip of dark cobalt blue roadway is rhythmically punctuated by bursts of white light in the form of thick strokes. An elegant lamppost rises on the left, vertically structuring the street space. In the distance, a stone span with multiple arches crosses the river where structures are reflected under a cloudy sky laden with grey, yellow and blue.

The artist proves his technical virtuosity by using violent contrasts of complementary colors to suggest the movement and light of the city. His prompt and assured gesture gives the scene a captivating spontaneity, typical of the great masterpieces of the early century.
