The Brig-Schooners, Antibes de Paul Signac

A vibrant reproduction of a painting depicting two large sailing ships in oil paint

This sumptuous harbor composition introduces a highly rich work of art signed by Paul Signac and titled “The Brig-Schooners, Antibes”. Fully belonging to the divisionist aesthetic, the scene exploits an extremely vibrant pastel color palette to express Mediterranean light. The artist replaces the traditional line here with a multitude of rectangular and square pointillist touches. This scientific process gives the whole an almost magical luminosity and atmosphere.

In the center of the harbor basin, two imposing three-masted sailboats are at anchor under a twilight sky. The ship in the foreground shows furled white sails and a hull enhanced with yellow, red, and violet touches. The second vessel, positioned slightly behind on the right, raises its slender rigging in a sky tinged with golden yellow and mauve. In the foreground, the calm water behaves like a perfect mirror, beautifully reflecting the hulls of the ships and the light of the sky. In the background, a purple chain of rocky mountains stands out on the horizon, flanked on the left by a fortified citadel with golden stones.

This painting testifies to an extraordinary craftsmanship in manipulating light and space. The artist uses oil paint with a methodical precision to saturate every area of the canvas with an opaline clarity. The rendering of the water reflections and the distant mountains is of great visual lyricism.
