The capture of Juliers by Pierre Paul Rubens

This splendid master copy celebrates a royal triumph with heroic Baroque dynamism.

Designed to celebrate the regency of the Queen of France, this vast allegorical composition transforms a political milestone into a divine triumph. The artist Pierre Paul Rubens deploys his full theatrical invention in “Le Triomphe de Marie de Médicis” to heroize the sovereign in the guise of an ancient goddess. The artwork commands attention through its Baroque dynamism, its profusion of martial symbols, and the splendor of its celestial procession.:::::The queen sits proudly atop a majestic white stallion with a braided mane, wearing a gold gown embroidered with fleurs-de-lis and a helmet adorned with tall blue and white feathers. She firmly holds the baton of command with one hand while advancing with a noble gait across the battlefield. Above her, a winged figure of Victory flies through the skies, placing a laurel wreath upon her head. On the left, a personification of France in a purple dress leads a roaring lion walking beside the horse on a leash. In the background, a fortified city stands near a river beneath a menacing sky swept by battle smoke. Brilliant light makes the stallion’s white coat and the queen’s precious embroideries sparkle.:::::The virtuosity of Pierre Paul Rubens lies in the complex arrangement of figures and the dazzling rendering of royal textiles. His masterful technique of oil painting infuses heroic motion as well as striking realism into this political allegory.
