The Chair Factory at Alfortville (Rousseau)

Henri Rousseau casts a poetic gaze on the industrial landscape of the Parisian suburbs with “The Chair Factory at Alfortville.” Far from the somber vision of some of his contemporaries, he paints this place with astonishing clarity and serenity. The composition is rigorous, almost geometric, with clear lines structuring the space: the curved road, the straight canal, the simply shaped buildings. The colors are soft and harmonious, dominated by the ocher of the ground, the blue of the sky and water, and the red of the roofs. The sky, filled with cottony clouds, occupies a large part of the canvas and gives the scene a peaceful atmosphere. A few small human figures discreetly animate the landscape.
