Entitled “The Cherubim Bart and Homer”, this painting parodies with great derision the famous angels from the bottom of Raphael’s Sistine Madonna. This composition replaces celestial purity with the quirky humor of America’s craziest family. In the original work, two small, pensive, and innocent angels with white wings lean on a balustrade while looking towards the sky. The parody keeps this iconic pose but replaces them with Homer and Bart Simpson. Equipped with small white wings on their yellow skin, they display comical attitudes. On the left, Homer holds and greedily eats a pink-frosted donut, replacing the original meditative pose. On the right, Bart leans with a mischievous, playful smirk. The vaporous sky in the background respects the soft Renaissance clouds while adopting Matt Groening’s cartoon style. This lighthearted parody playful updates the classical composition.
