The Construction Workers by Fernand Léger

This monumental work illustrates one of the most famous and beloved themes of the artist’s late career. By narratively integrating the composition entitled “The Construction Workers”, the artist Fernand Léger pays a vibrant tribute to construction workers and worker solidarity. This work is part of his great series dedicated to builders, symbols of post-war reconstruction and progress. Several workers are active at different heights on a complex network of red, black, and white metal beams. At the top, two men are seated on crossmembers, while in the center, a worker in a checkered shirt climbs a vertical ladder. At the bottom, three robust workers, two of whom are shirtless, together carry a heavy white wooden beam. The background consists of an intense blue sky dotted with stylized white clouds of organic and rounded shapes. On the right, a series of black and white discs stacked vertically evokes mechanical parts or gears. The brilliant light sculpts the muscular bodies and steel structures.

The painter displays here all the strength of his graphic art and his mastery of oil on canvas. His technique for integrating realistic human figures into an abstract geometric architecture is remarkable. It is a masterful celebration of human labor.
