The Crucifixion by Jean Fouquet

This tragic composition of the Passion of Christ constitutes one of the most poignant and monumental sacred representations of fifteenth-century French art. At the foot of the crosses, a compact crowd of soldiers in sparkling plate armor and dignitaries in ceremonial red and blue robes moves with animation, some on horseback. In the lower left corner, the Virgin Mary, draped in a heavy midnight blue cloak of great depth, collapses in grief, supported by the holy women whose faces are marked by tears.
