This version of “The Dance Class”, housed at the Musée d’Orsay, is one of the artist’s most famous. The scene takes place in a large rehearsal room where the ballet master, Jules Perrot, gives his instructions. A multitude of young dancers in white tutus animate the space, some listening, others stretching or resting. Degas uses a complex composition with a slightly elevated viewpoint to orchestrate this large number of figures. It is an almost documentary-like observation of the hard work and discipline hidden behind the apparent grace of ballet.
