The Dance Class by Degas

This complex work by Edgar Degas, titled “The Dance Class”, is a major representation of the daily life of dancers at the Paris Opera, falling within the heart of the Impressionist movement. The artist favors an intimate and realistic vision of rehearsals, far from the superficial brilliance of the public stage. He strives to describe with honesty the physical effort, rigorous discipline, and waiting moments that punctuate the training of young ballerinas.

The scene takes place in a large rehearsal studio bathed in the diffuse light of large windows in the background. On the left, a splendid varnished wood spiral staircase rises to the ceiling, its graceful curve powerfully structuring the space of the room. Several ballerinas in white tutus practice in the center of the hall, some stretching their legs, others sketching dance steps. In the foreground on the right, a young girl sitting on a stool, a forest green shawl over her shoulders, readjusts her pink satin slipper. Another dancer stands near her, while observers chat discreetly in the background.

Degas Edgar displays here an exceptional mastery of oblique perspective and complex spatial organization. The subtle use of oil painting allows him to translate the vaporous transparency of tulle and the golden warmth of the polished floor. His unique sense of framing brings a striking impression of truth and spontaneity.
