The Dance* by Franz von Stuck

This panoramic composition is part of the German symbolism movement and the academic art of the late nineteenth century in an original way. On the left, the first two dancers, one dressed in a light tunic and the other entirely nude, initiate the movement. In the center, the red and blue draperies of the robes bring intense touches of color in the midst of the rising darkness. On the right, an antique column highlights the classical dimension of the scene, while distant silhouettes contemplate the dance. The diffuse and soft light envelops the whole, creating a gentle and mysterious ambiance.

The artist demonstrates an exceptional mastery of oil painting, particularly in the subtle modulation of the gray and blue shades of the sky.
