The Dream 1 by Franz Marc

Representative of the artistic maturity of German Expressionism and the mystical research of Der Blaue Reiter, this complex work created by Franz Marc bears the title of “The Dream 1”. The painter offers here a poetic and dreamlike synthesis, bringing together monumental creatures and a sleeping human figure within original nature. Through this scene, the artist explores the dream of an original communion between man, animal, and the cosmos.

In the top right, two imposing gray and bluish elephants stand next to each other, their massive silhouettes dominating the landscape. On the left, a small white animal, similar to a lamb or a young elephant, drinks near a dark tree trunk. In the foreground, a human figure wrapped in a scarlet red drapery lies deeply asleep on a bed of ocher earth. The surrounding decor is an assembly of geometric and organic shapes where emerald green foliage, purple planes, and bursts of yellow coexist. The light seems to come from the center of the canvas, gently illuminating the serene face of the sleeping figure and the giant shapes of the elephants.
