The Golden Age (Derain)

This large decorative composition is another vision of “The Golden Age”, very different from his Fauvist or Divisionist works. The style here is archaic, inspired by Renaissance frescoes or Gothic art. In a dark and enchanted forest, nude humans coexist peacefully with animals (lions, deer). The forms are simplified, the outlines are sharp, and the palette is sober. The work has a narrative and allegorical dimension, evoking a lost paradise. It is a typical creation of Derain’s later period, where he sought to create a timeless art, far from the fashions of the avant-garde, by drawing on the most ancient traditions.
