The Good Samaritan by Vincent Van Gogh

A magnificent hand-painted canvas that beautifully captures this scene of solidarity with vibrant colors.

This dramatic narrative scene, entitled “The Good Samaritan”, is a masterful post-impressionist interpretation created by the famous painter Van Gogh Vincent. Modeled after a work by a great master he admired, this painting explores the biblical theme of compassion and selfless aid. The artist reinterprets the original composition with his own chromatic and emotional sensitivity, offering a powerful, modern vision of human solidarity in a wild landscape.

At the center of the canvas, the Good Samaritan, dressed in a bright orange tunic and turquoise blue trousers, exerts intense physical effort to lift the wounded traveler’s limp body onto his horse. The injured man, bare-chested and his head bound in a white bandage, slumps heavily in his savior’s arms. A patient brown horse stands in profile on the right, harnessed and calm. In the background, a steep path winds into a narrow rocky gorge, bordered by jagged mountain cliffs swirling in shades of violet, green, and golden yellow under a side light. On the far left, an abandoned chest lies forgotten on the grassy slope, highlighting the previous robbery.

The artist demonstrates here exceptional mastery of movement and human anatomy in tension. The saturated complementary colors of orange and blue create a remarkable visual dynamism, while the sinuous brushstrokes follow the contours of the rocks and bodies to amplify the drama.
