The Lady of the Camellias by Alfons Mucha

This hand-painted picture reveals all the theatrical grace of an actress in a white dress

The legendary collaboration between the famous tragedienne and the master of the poster revolutionizes the artistic advertising of the turn of the century. For this play, Alphonse Mucha integrates with pomp the artwork title “The Lady of the Camellias” in a vertical composition of unequaled elegance. The painter immortalizes the actress in a tragic role, creating a timeless icon where theater, fashion and illustration marry in an absolute Art Nouveau masterpiece.

The tragedienne Sarah Bernhardt is represented in profile, turned to the right, draped in a sumptuous white satin dress with delicate folds. She wears a cape bordered with soft fur and holds a long light silk scarf that flows to the ground. A white camellia flower is pinned in her red hair styled in a bun, and she gently presses her left hand against her shoulder. Behind her silhouette unfolds a dark purple background dotted with silver and blue stars, surrounded by an arch with oriental patterns. At the bottom of the poster, an anonymous hand holds out a flowering branch of white camellias against a silver background.

Mucha’s technical virtuosity shines in the textured rendering of the fur and the silky folds of the white dress. The use of contrasting colors, between the starry purple and the immaculate whiteness of the drapery, bears witness to an exceptional sense of advertising impact. This work remains the perfect testimony of his graphic genius.
