The Last Supper (Derain)

André Derain’s interpretation of “The Last Supper” is a powerful and austere work, strongly influenced by Cubism and Byzantine art. Painted around 1911, it breaks down the biblical scene into simplified geometric forms. The apostles are monolithic figures with mask-like faces, gathered around a white table. The palette is deliberately restricted to shades of gray, blue, and brown, creating an atmosphere of solemn gravity. The figure of Christ, in the center, stands out within a blue arch. Derain abandons all naturalism to focus on the spiritual and monumental structure of the event, delivering a deeply personal and modern vision of a classical theme.
